Sister Genevieve Killian Griffing was born on January 28, 1953, to George Singleton, Sr., and Ruthie Mae Killian. Genevieve was a stellar scholar in school, where she attended Waverly High School, and completed her final year at Crowville High School. She married Orea “Sonny” Griffing on April 30, 1972. To this union four amazing children were born: Hilton, Tony, Ron, and Kimberly. Never one to mince words, Ms. G was known by her school peers and school children as “the Real McCoy”. She believed in the word of God, respect, family, and love.
She devoted her earlier work life to Greer’s Café in Crowville, Louisiana, where she was one of the lead cooks. Later she had an opportunity to work in the Franklin Parish School Board system as a custodian at Crowville High School. The staff and students fell in love with Ms. G’s charm, sass, and matter-of-fact attitude. She worked at Crowville for about 20 plus years. If you wanted the “tea”, she gave you the tea with a little extra. God’s girl was a force to be reckoned with. Sister Genevieve joined the Pleasant Green Baptist Church at an early age, where she was an usher. She served as lead secretary at Pleasant Green Baptist Church of Crowville, Louisiana, for the majority of her adult life with her baby sister, Trudy (Ann), and daughter Kim. She wore many hats and performed each role to perfection. Whether she was “momming” to her children and grandchildren, offering advice, explaining how to handle your business, or placing an online order at Walmart, she was standing on business.
She loved connecting with her cell phone, listening to gospel music, drinking a strong cup of coffee, eating good Southern-style food, and spending time with her siblings, children, family, and friends. On Sundays, you could find her watching YouTube and enjoying Pastor Terry Anderson. She was an avid reader for studying God’s word, and she was one of his most prized warrior queens. If she could lend a hand, she would or send a prayer, or just pick up the phone, she was there.
